Instead, he was referring to the shorter route he was able to travel by skirting the nearby Maw black hole cluster, thus making the run in under the standard distance. By moving closer to the black holes, Solo managed to cut the distance down to about 11.5 parsecs.

Having read a shocking amount about the Kessel Run and the Millenium Falcon, I accept this explanation. What is impressive about it is that it confers the speed of the ship not to the engines (as hyperspeed is probably just one speed for all vessels) but to the navigational computer that Solo uses in the Falcon. I think that’s quite nice. 

Despite all of that, it’s clear that it was just a screw-up in the script that has been elegantly explained away.
