queenbeesknees asked: I am attempting to write a kind of science fiction novel and I wanted to ask YOU rather than Google: Are scientists and astronomers aware of every planet in our galaxy? I'm just trying to make up a planet and I want to make it at least a little bit believable.
Oh lord no. We know of probably 0.0000001% of planets in our galaxy. I don’t know if the decimal is in the right place but, yeah, it’s a tiny fraction.
In general, in our galaxy, or some other galaxy, there is every sort of conceivable planet out there…we probably just won’t ever be able to see them or study them.
